Ready your filters and steady your sunglasses: Here’s the best holiday spots for social media addicts

KAYAK.ie reveals the most Instagram-friendly destinations worldwide

  • London is Europe’s most ‘instagrammed’ city and the most affordable for Irish travellers with an average flight price of €75
  • Dubai is the most often tagged city on Instagram when it comes to popular destinations outside Europe
  • KAYAK.ie shares insider tips for successful social media posts in popular cities

Social media has become an integral part of travelling for reviews and recommendations, but tourists are increasingly on the lookout for the perfect ‘snapworthy’ locations and backdrops to capture for their social media feeds. Particularly millennials (under 25’s) are choosing to share holiday experiences on social media, and for many, that’s almost half the fun of going on holiday. KAYAK.ie has prepared an extensive guide for social media addicts, revealing how Ireland’s most popular travel destinations rank on Instagram, along with average flight costs, and local highlights for top destinations, including that ‘must-snap’ location.

How do Irish holidaymakers’ favourite destinations rank on Instagram?

Out of the top 15 favourite destinations for Irish travellers in 2017, London is sitting pretty at the top for popularity, as well as being the most frequently tagged on Instagram, with over 79M hashtags. It’s followed by Paris (the 7th favourite destination this year) with 67M hashtags. The two capitals each have more than double the tags of any other European city on the list.

For tourists and the socially-savvy alike, it’s inexpensive to visit these two picturesque cities: those who want to take a selfie with Big Ben can expect to pay on average from just €75 for return flights this year, while those preferring a romantic portrait against a backdrop of the Eiffel Tower can fly from an average of €115. Barcelona is also a firm favourite, making it into the top 5 popular destinations and the 3rd most frequently tagged, while the street art capital of Berlin (23M Instagram posts) and the Spanish cultural hub of Madrid (20M posts) close out the top five instagrammed cities.

Dubai is the only Middle Eastern destination to be featured in the 15 most popular worldwide destinations for Irish holidaymakers this year, but it’s also the most ‘instagrammable’ destination worldwide with over 54M hashtags, even beating New York. This comes as no surprise, as the desert city provides amazing architecture and sunsets to inspire envy-worthy posts. Major US metropolises – New York (with over 50M hashtags), Los Angeles and Chicago, and finally Tokyo close out the top five most tagged cities on Instagram.

London

See Big Ben: surprisingly small despite its name, but iconic nonetheless

Eat Traditional English fish and chips with mushy peas: whether it’s served on newspaper or expensive tableware, this English favourite must be sampled before leaving London.

Try The Angel Comedy Club: a five-minute walk from Angel tube stop, this completely free-of-charge comedy show has the audience splitting their sides thanks to London’s best undiscovered talent.

Instagram Leicester Square: like a mini Times Square, Leicester Square reveals London in all its glory. Nearby  authentic Chinatown is well worth a snap (and a bite to eat) too.

Paris

See The Louvre: visit the world’s largest museum and see the iconic Mona Lisa.

Eat Amorino: so very French! Enjoy Amorino’s perfect French-style ice cream parlours and unique flower-shaped gelato.

Try Seine River Cruise: can this city get any more romantic? A moonlit river cruise along the Seine is a must-do.

Instagram Eiffel Tower: it’s extremely hard to miss from the ground, but snapping one of the world’s most beautiful cities from 300 metres off the ground in the tower itself is definitely unmissable.

Berlin

See Awe-inspiring street art: the suburb of Friedrichshain has some of the most creative street art in the city. Take a free dedicated street art walking tour to be sure to see all of the hidden gems.

Eat Currywurst: sausage in curry sauce…sure it’s not the fanciest of dishes, but it’s tasty, and it’s the most iconic Berlin street food.

Try Matrix Nightclub: check out the insane nightlife of Berlin in one of the city’s best nightclubs. Move to the groove under the glitter balls of this multi-story club and befriend fellow travellers.

Instagram East Side Gallery: this historical monument is a remnant of the Berlin wall, stretching for over 1km and painted with world-class murals.
