Dublin, 13 June: Summer is nearly here and the holiday season is kicking off. Recognising that the Irish love a good bargain, travel search engine KAYAK.ie has analysed its data to find the cheapest destinations around the globe to enjoy a one-week stay this summer. The formula is based on total costs for a holiday over summer (June to August) – including return flights, 4-star hotel accommodation, economy-class car hire, food, drink, entertainment, and even a souvenir – for popular European and worldwide destinations.
Where bargain hunters can find the cheapest holiday this summer
Overall, Murcia comes out top in the cheap charts, with a full week costing just €875. However, it is not the only affordable European destination, with a week-long trip to Prague or Las Palmas both achievable for under €1,000 as well – including all costs.
It’s not only around Europe where great bargains are available. A week in Kuala Lumpur, for example, will set Irish holidaymakers back an average of just €1,180 – amazingly nearly as cheap as a week in Madrid (€1,136). The Thai capital, Bangkok, and Denpasar in Bali are also enticing destinations that won’t break the bank, and even a week in Las Vegas is available for under €2,000.
What are the 5 cheapest summer destinations in Europe for Irish holiday planners?
Murcia is the cheapest destination for Irish holidaymakers this summer, with the cheapest overall costs for a week-long stay. Of the five bargain locations, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the most expensive to fly to, but it makes up for this by being by far the cheapest to get around. Car hire price is less than half the price of other destinations in the list – for a week it’ll cost Irish drivers just €66. Madrid, on the other hand, is the most expensive in most categories, but earns itself a place on the list thanks to incredibly cheap flights at just €117 on average.
When it comes to dining, Prague is the best bargain, but Murcia can’t be beaten for cocktails. Three mojitos in the Spanish city will set Irish holidaymakers back just €8 (around the price of one back home). In addition, museum passes and souvenirs are easily affordable – with a keepsake fridge magnet costing between €2-4 in each of the five cities, and museum passes available for under €10 in all but Prague.

For destinations outside of Europe, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia is by far the cheapest destination. A week-long stay averages €1,180 thanks in part to its inexpensive hotels – just €395 for a 7-night stay. Hefty savings are also to be found for dining out, at just €25 for 3 days of meals, Irish holidaymakers can eat well for cheap and save money for other activities.
Asian destinations clearly offer the best intercontinental holiday steals this summer, Bangkok, Denpasar and with Hong Kong follow behind Kuala Lumpur. The fifth place surprisingly goes to Las Vegas, where in spite of pricier hotels, relatively inexpensive flights and drinks costs will help save Irish visitors some pocket money to try their luck at the casinos or splash out on some proper pampering.
