FAQs for booking flights from the United States to Ireland

  • Do I need a visa to travel to Ireland?

Citizens of the US and of the Eurozone do not require visas in order to fly to Ireland. Permanent residents of the United States and all other residents plus foreign nationals who desire to visit the country should check with their local embassy or consulate to see if they need to apply for one before they travel.

  • Should I purchase euros before or after I arrive in Ireland?

All three of the major international airports in Ireland are well equipped to handle currency exchange transactions and there are also plenty of ATMs if needed, so it is really an individual decision. However, many passengers tend to purchase foreign currency after they arrive at their destination.

  • If I wish to visit Donegal, which airport should I use?

Donegal is the northernmost county in the Republic of Ireland and if you wish to visit, you can use Dublin Airport as the destination for your flight from the US to Ireland since it is the closest of the major airports in the country.

  • Can I get a nonstop flight from the US to Ireland?

Yes, you can get a direct flight from the US to Ireland, however, the only nonstop flights from the US to Ireland depart from cities along the US East Coast including New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia (PHL). Among the airlines providing nonstop service are Aer Lingus, the Irish national airline, and Finnair.

  • How does KAYAK find such low prices on flights from the United States to Ireland?

KAYAK is a travel search engine. That means we look across the web to find the best prices we can find for our users. With over 2 billion flight queries processed yearly, we are able to display a variety of prices and options on flights from the United States to Ireland.

  • How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from the United States to Ireland?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight to Ireland from the United States is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

  • What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from the United States to Ireland?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional return ticket. You could then fly to Ireland with an airline and back to the United States with another airline.

  • What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from the United States to Ireland?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying to Ireland from the United States up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.

Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of the United States

  • If you are planning a flight from the US to Ireland, you will most likely arrive at one of the three major international airports in the Republic of Ireland: Dublin Airport (DUB), which services the eastern counties, Cork Airport (ORK), servicing the southern counties, and Shannon Airport (SNN), serving the western counties.
  • Although Dublin Airport and Cork Airport rank ahead in terms of passenger traffic, Shannon Airport is the most centrally located of the three and, therefore, it allows for greater access to the interior and western counties. It is also an excellent staging point for exploring the Aran Islands off the coast of County Galway.
  • Flying into Dublin Airport puts you in the nation’s capital and allows for exploration of County Wicklow, County Kildare and County Meath, whereas Cork Airport provides excellent access to County Cork, County Kerry and County Limerick.
  • The Heartland of Ireland, which includes the counties of Roscommon, Tullamore, Mullingar and Offaly, lies midway between Dublin Airport to the east and Shannon Airport to the west, so a flight into either one should provide ready access. However, you are more likely to get better public transportation out of the capital city of Dublin.
  • If you’re looking for inexpensive, nonstop flights to Dublin, Ireland, why not consider flying aboard Norwegian Air International from New York Stewart Airport (SWF)? Located about an hour outside of Manhattan in Orange County, it’s a good alternative to the hustle and bustle of Newark Liberty Airport (EWF) and JFK Airport in addition to being only a short train ride away.

Smooth boarding and friendly crew. Unfortunately as soon as we boarded the unit that provides air circulation failed. The pilot informed us and requested maintenance technicians to check it out. The plane became uncomfortably warm without any fresh air coming in. Plus the repair delayed our departure. I am glad the maintenance crew were able to fix the problem. I also was without use of my tv monitor for the first 1/3rd of the trip.

Flight was on time arrived at the destination 10min early they kept in touch via email

Communication with the customer and stay is important. Staff off with a minor inconvenience but it worked out of course. Also this was a very old Mint Class plane. They snuck this one in on us. The updated aircraft are much better.

The flight itself was fine, but the boarding process was extremely frustrating. There is no one scanning boarding passes - passengers just scan themselves and enter the jetway. By the time my husband and I got on the plane and were halfway to our seats they determined there were too many bags on the plane and everything at that point needed to be checked. This created a lot of unnecessary chaos. They should have alerted people before getting on the plane that they would need to start checking bags instead of waiting until people were already on the plane.

The best flight I’ve had in a while. The plane was like 25% capacity, if that. Smoothest boarding and deplaning process I’ve ever experienced. Wish all flights were this smooth.

Did not enjoy this flight at all. All of my coworkers flew delta and I chose JetBlue because I really value how simple the WiFi and entertainment is and this flight I didn’t get either. Crew staff was unsympathetic to my system not working, everyone I asked for help with was extremely bothered by my request for help.

In flight on demand didn't work at our seats. Only a single beverage/snack run.

Little snafu at boarding. Staff communicated with gate poorly. Flight attendant was rude making disembark early. This was an older mint class. Needs an overhaul for sure. Food was good. The male flight attendant was really nice.

My encounter with the entertainment services provided on board was moderate; the functionality of the Wi-Fi connection was either sluggish or nonoperational, while the display screens were antiquated and suffered from poor visibility. On the positive side, the cabin exuded a sense of expansiveness, and the crew exhibited amiable and accommodating behavior throughout the journey.

The flying experience was great. The flight was on time with no boarding issues during a peak travel period. The short cut baggage drop and process was not smooth and efficient at Dulles.

Flight attendant gave incorrect information and no immigration/customs forms!

No food service almost missed because of first flight delays

It was good. Just that the seats could not be reclined. The people behind were not ready to let the chairs be reclined

Plane was was better than th YVR to ORD flight but was a fraction of the distance. Fly your better planes on longer distance flights.

After checking in online i called United to make sure I have special food ordered ( kosher option). Representative I spoke with on the phone with assured me that special meal was ordered. On the plane, during meal service I was informed that there is no note about it and no kosher meal was ordered for me. Flight attendant said she will check if maybe was a mix up and meal is somewhere. But never came back with any update. So entire flight with no food...

Delays from united along with Newark air space caused delays. But an average flight! Unfortunately we come to expect delays from the airlines.

My flight was delayed. They boarded us, then no sooner were we on the plane, they made us get off again and wait another 45 minutes before doing it all over again.

Had a hard time finding my assigned seat. No attendants to assist.

Attendants zipped through cabin so fast hardly anyone got the water they told us we could have in the short flight. Nothing else was offered.

Flight overall was good. Landing was a little rough, but could be attributed to the rainy weather.

Check bag location is full of rude employees who are unwilling to assist with issues after talking to AA on the phone and relaying messages. The boarding was good. While on the flight it got really hot. Asked flight attendant if there’s a way to drop the temp and make it more comfortable as we are flying from DC to Miami so flying from cold to hot weather. No changes made. Stayed hot and uncomfortable on the plane. When asked again about the AC being down the flight attendant said no the WiFi was down but not the AC. I mentioned it was still hot. No changes.

I was in a wheelchair and went from international to domestic. I was transferred to several different modes of transport and expected to give a tip at each transfer. I was, although, grateful to get to the gate in time for my flight.

The flight was good. The only reason I did not say “excellent” was the delay

They didn't have any gluten-free snacks, oddly, which I require...or any flavored soda water or decaf tea options, which seems to be standard.

The flight was great, and I have never ridden in first class previously so I don't have any practical knowledge of the norm. The flight out to DFW was delayed and I sat in economy which was as expected, not nearly as spoiled as I was in first class which had more general room but that is par for the course. I have no complaints and will wait until I fly American again before I can make a valid improvement. I will fly American again in the future.

The plane was very warm and the crew turned on the lights for the entire snack service.

It was okay. I opted to pay for an upgrade to an exit row, but this might’ve been the worst exit row experience I’ve ever had. - The fold out table was janky and didn’t fold out properly. - The seats felt squished together as I was the aisle seat in the group of three, but the guy in the middle felt like he was constantly leaning on me. - Everyone who walked by brushed up against me, or knocked my entertainment screen, to include the food and drink carts. Didn’t get one apology or excuse me. - The community flight tracker screen was right in front of me and was sooooooo bright I could barely catch any sleep on my 13hr flight from Seoul to DFW. Not the best experience at all…

There was a delay that affected all passengers with connecting flights.

Airlines must do something with overweight people... Maybe reserve a business class seat for them, or you could pay the consequences if someone overweight seat side by side to you in economy.

Very sad, couldn't stop crying. Was an hour delay in Ireland and when we got to Canada the flight was boarded and couldn't get on. Was the last flight of the day. Now in a hotel waiting on a stand by.I have to got o work, so I'll go first available while my son stays in the hotel til one's available

Both flights late. Almost missed connecting flight and flight staff not willing to help expedite us off the plane.

We couldn't talk to aer lingus we had issues with the flight change and aer lingus made us talk to kayak

Amenity kits were never handed out. There was zero friendliness and assistance by crew. Food was uneatable. One drink was offered and no wine, with dinner or before or after. Cocktails and beverages were not encouraged and when I asked for water, none was given. Poorest, most cramped business class flight I’ve ever been on.

Probably my favorite airline and way to go to Europe. Everything went smoothly! Food was tasty, crew was pleasant. Really cannot complain!

Golf Bags never made it on the flight. Very expensive golf bag and. Clubs, shoes, clothing. Will file a claim against Aer Lingus

Horrible. Garbage airline. Due to the strike we got a replacement plane/crew. I didn't get my exit row seat I paid for. Food was horrible. Plane was hot and didn't have AC vents.

The first leg of my 2 flights were delayed, causing me to miss my second flight and have to stay the whole night in Dublin. Super upset with this experience, and I still need to figure out how to get compensated for this.

Everything went well, but could have used a bit more legroom.

The flight got us safely from point a to point b and on time. For a transatlantic flight that isnt nothing. Flight crew was kind and professional. The seats are super uncomfortable (worse than domestic budget airlines) and the cabin was DIRTY.

It would have been better to have USB charging ports available on the longer haul Flight that one of 2 hours

Was very good Staff was great. No tv monitors tho. So long flights make it longer

The worst. No free beverages. No entertainment on an overseas flight. Not enough space. Never again.

Play is affordable! Only way we fly from the states to Europe. Left late but arrived on time

have screens on backs of chairs...offer free snacks and water

Boarding and crew was great. Flight was cold, need layers. Deplaning was hard. We had to take stairs off the plane and I was separated from my travel companion because we were not seated together and they would not let him wait for me to get off so we were forced onto different shuttles.

Check in and boarding was easy, crew was cheerful. Not much to read or do on the plane and our neighboring passengers were talking loudly so we could not sleep. But overall good. Great coffee.

Flyplay is the only way I travel to Europe. Had a 15 hr layover in Iceland. Normally this would suck, but I regret a car and saw the black sand beaches, several waterfalls and sky lagoon. And finished with lamb at cafe Loki.

did not get the seats we had specially paid for

This is a no frills airline. You cant expect much for the price. Low cost flight, clean, nice staff. That's all I need for the price. If you want more, book with another airline and pay more. For Europe trips, PLAY is the ONLY airline I use
