Based in Hong Kong, HK Express specifically targets the East Asian region with a range of direct services. Among the countries with the most routes are Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. It is a founding member of the U-FLY Alliance and partnered with Chinese carriers West Air, Lucky Air, and Urumqi Air to establish a wide-reaching network. The alliance made waves in the aviation industry, becoming the world’s first low-cost association.
Commencing operations in 2004, HK Express became Hong Kong’s first low-cost airline. Onboard amenities, such as complimentary meals and snacks, are not provided; however, they can be purchased before or during a flight. It is a subsidiary of Cathay Pacific and has benefited from the wide-spread resources that the boutique carrier has.
While the majority of seats in the cabin are Economy, some are reserved for Premium Economy. Economy seats offer roughly 28 in of legroom and are configured in a 3 x 3 layout. This means you may want to upgrade to Premium Economy or pay for seat reservation if you want to avoid sitting between two people. All passengers are permitted a carry-on bag weighing no more than 7 kg (approximately 15 lb) and a personal item.
Exclusively Airbus aircraft are flown by HK Express. The fleet is tailored to short-distance flights and includes both A320 and A321 models. The seating arrangements allow between 180 and 230 passengers to travel on each service. A sleek purple design is painted on the planes, which features a silhouette of Hong Kong city’s skyline. Many of the aircraft in the fleet are named after traditional dishes, such as milk tea (Lai Cha), noodles (Sanuki Udon), chicken wings (Tebaski), and rice noodle rolls (Coeng Fan).
